3-Marcus plan and betrayal
Marcus’s Plan and Betrayal in Verdis (~1005 A.Y., Post-Labyrinth Escape)
Context: After escaping Solon’s betrayal at the Battle of Veridian Fields (early 1005 A.Y.) through the Labyrinth of the Shattered Islands, Marcus, First Consul of Veridia (age ~50), reaches Verdis, Veridia’s ruined secondary port city. Buoyed by his survival, he formulates an optimistic plan to counter the Drakorian-Aegean alliance, aiming to rally Veridia’s remnants, Eldoria’s survivors, Norgard’s tribes, and marginalized groups from the Shattered Islands, Desert Enclaves, and extreme northern tribes. However, Solon’s envoys, sent by Myra’s manipulation, arrive in Verdis first, bribing the Senate with promises of fair treatment in the Drakorian-Aegean Empire if they kill Marcus. The Senate, including Marcus’s close friends, betrays and assassinates him upon his arrival, ending his resistance.
Geography:
- Verdis: A coastal port in southern Veridia, with crumbling walls, a small harbor, and a Senate Hall of weathered marble, surrounded by vineyards ravaged by war.
- Shattered Islands: A misty archipelago west of Aegea, home to pirate clans and fisherfolk, loosely allied but fiercely independent.
- Desert Enclaves: Arid southern wastes beyond Drakoria, inhabited by nomadic traders and mystics, unaffiliated with the five nations.
- Extreme Northern Tribes: Reclusive clans beyond Norgard’s fjords, living in icy tundra, known for guerilla tactics and distrust of outsiders.
Marcus’s Plan:
- Rally Veridia: Unite surviving legionaries (~5,000), scholars, and militia in Verdis, leveraging his Azure Quill legacy to rebuild a defensive army.
- Eldorian Survivors: Send envoys to Eldoria’s scattered zealots (~3,000), appealing to their faith and Alaric’s memory to join a resistance.
- Norgard Tribes: Contact Norgard’s rebel clans (~8,000), still fighting Drakorian occupation, offering Veridian grain for their axes, via Clanmeet intermediaries.
- Marginalized Groups:
- Shattered Islands: Recruit pirate crews (~2,000) with promises of plunder and autonomy, using Veridian ships to ferry them.
- Desert Enclaves: Enlist nomadic warriors (~1,500) with trade deals, appealing to their neutrality to harass Drakorian supply lines.
- Northern Tribes: Seek alliances with tundra clans (~1,000), offering weapons for guerilla raids on Norgard’s Drakorian garrisons.
- Optimism: Marcus, aboard Quill’s Hope, envisions a coalition (~20,500 fighters) to retake Libertas, believing his diplomacy and empathy can unite disparate groups against Zara and Solon’s empire. He clutches his quill pendant, hopeful despite Veridia’s ruin.
The Betrayal and Assassination:
- Location: Senate Hall, Verdis, a circular chamber with cracked marble pillars and faded murals, lit by torches.
- Solon’s Envoys: Myra dispatches three Aegean diplomats (led by Captain Syrine) to Verdis days before Marcus’s arrival, carrying gold and Solon’s sealed terms: nobility retain lands and titles in the Drakorian-Aegean Empire if they kill Marcus and surrender. Syrine bribes key senators, exploiting Verdis’s starvation and fear.
- Senate’s Decision: The Senate, 30 nobles including Marcus’s friends (e.g., Senator Lucius, his childhood ally, and Senator Aelia, his former mentor), debates in secret. Facing famine and Drakorian sieges, they reluctantly agree, swayed by promises of safety. Lucius and Aelia, torn but pragmatic, justify it as saving Veridia’s people.
- Marcus’s Arrival (Mid 1005 A.Y.): Marcus beaches Quill’s Hope at Verdis’s harbor, greeted by weary refugees. Exhausted but resolute, he marches to the Senate Hall with 38 surviving legionaries, his Azure Quill pendant gleaming. He expects support, unaware of the envoys’ plot.
- Assassination: Marcus enters the Senate Hall, addressing the nobles with fervor, outlining his coalition plan: “Veridia stands with Eldoria, Norgard, even the Shattered Isles—we’ll break this empire together!” Lucius, eyes downcast, signals. Aelia, trembling, nods. Six senators, armed with concealed daggers, rush Marcus mid-speech. His legionaries are restrained by Senate guards. Marcus fights briefly, wounding one attacker, but Lucius stabs him in the chest, whispering, “Forgive us, friend.” Aelia delivers a second blow, tears falling. Marcus collapses, blood staining his pendant, murmuring, “For Veridia…” as he dies.
- Aftermath: The Senate surrenders Verdis to Drakorian-Aegean forces, securing their terms. Marcus’s death (~1005 A.Y.) ends Veridian resistance, paving the way for Zara’s occupation until 1010 A.Y. (when a traitor’s betrayal completes Veridia’s fall). His legionaries scatter, some vowing vengeance. Solon’s envoys return to Aegea, Myra’s manipulation ensuring the Pact’s collapse. Marcus’s coalition dream dies, but his sacrifice inspires later Veridian rebels.
Casualties:
- Veridia: Marcus, 5 legionaries (killed resisting guards).
- Senate/Drakoria-Aegea: 1 senator (wounded by Marcus).
